Abstract
252,923. Stansell, C. H. July 10, 1925. Screws, inserting.-In a power-driven screwdriver the screw is received within a recess 10 of a stationary casing 1 which closely fits the head and is rotated by a bit 31 held on a shank 3 driven by a clutch 32 and a shaft 6 connected to a motor. A collar 30 adjustably secured to the shank by a screw 33 engages a shoulder 14 on the casing to disengage the bit from the screw when the latter has been inserted to the required depth. A spring 4 'normally maintains the shank in a retracted position and a second spring 49 normally maintains the clutch in the disengaged position, the spring 40 being the stronger so that it may engage the screw before it is rotated. The bit, which serves to prevent complete withdrawal of the shank, is secured to the latter by a dovetailed connection, and bushes may be secured by a set screw inside the recess 10 for screws having smaller heads. A hole 16 in the casing provides access to the screw 33 for adjustment of the collar 30.
