Abstract
601,638. Spring buffers for railway vehicles. MARSH, J. W. Nov. 2, 1945, Nos. 29211 and 29212. Convention dates, Nov. 9, 1944, and Nov. 25, 1944. [Class 103 (v)] A buffer for railway cars comprises a plunger 13 carrying a head 12 and retained in a housing 1 by radial lugs 5 on the casing which engage lugs 14, 15, 16 on the plunger. The plunger is prevented from rotating (which would permit the lugs 14, 15, 16 to pass between the lugs 5) by a key member 18 which comprises a base portion 19 which engages the end plate 2 of the housing by means preventing rotation of the key member 18, and keys 22, 23 which fit between the lugs 14, 15, 16 on the plunger 13. A spring 24 urges the plunger 13 out of the housing 1 and also presses the base 19 of the key member 18 into engagement with the end plate 2 of the housing. As shown, the base 19 of the key member 18 has an apertured polygonal spigot 17 which is received within a polygonal opening 3 in the end plate 2. In an alternative construction, the base 19 and the end plate 2 are formed with co-operating ridges and depressions so that the pressure of the spring 24 prevents the key member 18 from rotating relatively to the housing. To dis-assemble the buffer shown, the key member 18 is pressed from the rear into the housing 1 and out of engagement with the end plate 2. The plunger 13 and key member 18 may then be rotated together until the lugs 14, 15, 16 will pass between the lugs 5.
