Abstract
607,537. Buffers for railway vehicles. MINER, Inc., W. H. Feb. 7, 1946, No. 3914. Convention date, June 4, 1945. [Class 103 (v)] A combined spring and friction buffer comprises a buffer head 16, Fig. 4, with tubular stem 15 slotted at 36 to receive a pin 34 fixed in the external casing A which is enlarged at 13, the base 10 being buttressed by ribs 14, Fig. 3. A friction casing 1 7 has a closed end 25, and the open end is provided with angular friction surfaces 27 to engage corresponding surfaces on blocks 19, which co-act with the surfaces of a wedge block 18. The pin 34 passes through elongated holes 36 and 126 in the plunger and friction casing respectively, the holes 36 being longer than the holes 126 to allow the plunger 15 to abut shoulders 121 on the friction casing 17 when heavy buffing occurs. On light buffing shocks the plunger 15 retracts and compresses a spring D against the closed end 25 of the friction casing whilst a heavy shock causes the end of the plunger to abut the shoulder 121 to force the wedges 19 against the wedge block 18. The casing 17 has lugs 28, Fig. 1, (not shown), and Fig. 3, engaging behind lugs 33 on the wedge block so that when the buffing pressure is released a return spring 20 frees the friction blocks 19 from the casing 17. In a modification the pin 34 passes through an elongated hole in a loose block abutting the closed end of the friction cylinder 17.
