Abstract

238,127. Russell, J. F. Jan. 5, 1925. Leakage, preventing. - A packing for valves and cocks consists of a metal cup 14, Fig. 2, having a corrugated surface engaging a similarlyformed surface on the valve cover 12 and a free edge 16a engaging a circular packing groove 6 in the valve casing. The cup is formed with a square spindle 21 to receive a handle, and is formed with a socket to receive the valve spindle 9. Packing 24, inserted in the socket, engages a recess 10 in the spindle 9. Leakage into the cup 14 escapes by a passage 5 to the outlet. The valve casing may be fitted with a cover 11 opposite to the cover 12, the cover being packed by a cup 13, similar to the cup 14. Packing for a check valve 7<a>, Fig. 8, comprises a stationary cup 13a having a corrugated surface engaging a similar surface on the valve cover 11<a> and a free edge engaging a groove 6a in the valve casing. A stem 23<a>, limiting the movement of the valve 7<a>, slides through square openings in the cup 13a and in a reinforcement 41 secured to the cup. The end of the stem 23a is threaded to engage the bore of a spindle 50 turned by a handwheel 53. The end of the spindle is formed with a packing cup, having a corrugated surface engaging a similar surface on a nut 12<a>, and a free edge engaging a packing groove in the back of the cup 13a.
