Blocks, special shapes of. - The walls of furnaces, gas-producers, and the like, have incorporated within them perforated and recessed fire-resisting blocks through which air under pressure is supplied from passages in the walls to the combustion chamber. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the front, side, and bridge walls of a furnace are provided with blocks 15 having one or more recesses 24, communicating with passages 14 in the furnace wall to which air under pressure is supplied by a fan 30, and with perforations 21 which may be conical. Fig. 6 shows a modified form of block 50 suitable for circular structures such as gas-producer furnaces. This block is provided with lugs 58 whereby it is spaced from and braced against the outer wall to withstand the pressure of the fuel.
