Abstract
223,083. Malloch, J. M. Dec. 11, 1923. Spindle apparatus.-Drag arrangements for bobbins in spinning, roving, winding, and like machines comprise a sole plate A, which supports the bobbin directly or by means of a washer secured thereto, and an adjustable brake band B<1>, of which one end is secured to a flange or a ring B on the sole plate and the other to a spring- controlled adjustable lever B<2>. As the bobbin rotates it imparts a turning-moment to the sole plate and so tensions the band, and, as the weight of the bobbin and the turning-moment increase, the lever B<2> turns slightly and so increases the arc of contact of the band, the frictional drag on the bobbin being thereby increased in a greater proportion than its weight. The lever B<2> is provided with a spring-handle B<4> adjustable in notches B<6> in the lifter rail to vary the initial arc of contact of the band, or a spring-arm on the lever may be arranged to engage another lever clamped to the lifter rail. A clearance space C is formed in the sole plate, the ends of which engage with the fulcrum of the lever B<2> or with one end of the other lever and serve as stops to limit its movement.
