[Class 120 (ii)] A device for tensioning yarn or the like in a winding or like machine comprises two opposed yarn-engaging elements between which the yarn is passed, one or both of the elements being constituted by a disc or discs or each disc having a face engaging the yarn with resilient tension-applying means which acts directly against the rim of the disc so that the rim transmits the tension-applying thrust and urges the disc towards the other disc or towards a support. As shown the device comprises a pair of cup-shaped discs 10, 11 having peripheral lips 20, 21 engaged by resilient discs 25, e.g. of rubber or fibre, one of the discs abutting against a washer 29 on, a dished bracket 18 fixed to the machine frame and the other disc being engaged by a thimble 28 on a spindle 27 passing through a hollow sleeve 12 fixed in bracket 18 and carrying the discs &c. The rod 27 has a hooked end 38 engaging a slot in the end of a lever 33 pivoted on the frame and adjustably connected by a rod 56 to an angular lever 53 having its other arm pivoted to the bent end 50 of a rod 49 the rod being adjustably connected to a bracket 46 secured to the counterweighted arm 6 pivoted on the cam shaft 4 of the machine and the end 50 being disposed on an elbow lever 48 pivoted on a fixed pivot 42; the arm 6 may as shown carry the reciprocating thread guide 5 or it may carry the bobbin being wound. The angle of the lever 53 is connected by a screw 52 to an arcuate slot in a tension lever 40 also pivoted on the end 50 of the rod 49 and by adjusting the screw 52 in the angular slot the initial pressure between the discs can be varied; as the frame 6 swings with the traversing thread guide 5 from the bobbin being wound the pressure between the discs is progressively reduced to maintain a constant tension on the yam. The elbow lever 48 is adjustably connected by a rod 43 with the bracket 46 and the rod is fixed to a weighted lever 41 pivoted on the pivot 42 so that as winding proceeds the pressure of the thread guide against the yarn being wound is progressively reduced due to the raising of the weighted levers. The discs &c. may be mounted on a fixed pin with one of the discs pressed against the other by a spring disposed between a washer abutting against the corresponding resilient disc and a collar adjustably fixed to the pin or the pin may be arranged vertically and carry disc weights pressing against the resilient disc. In a modification the resilient discs are replaced by spring metal spiders which are prevented from rotating on the carrying sleeve or pin.
