Abstract

Granulating.-In apparatus for granulating sla.g of the type in which the molten slag falls into a chamber through a jet or stream of water, the brittle globules of solidified slag being afterwards acted upon by ribs or vanes carried on a rotating drum, the granulation is effected in a substantially closed chamber and a current of air under pressure is admitted to the interior of the drum and thence through ports in the periphery thereof into and through the chamber; the air current may be preheated and means may be provided for increasing the velocity of the air current within the drum. As shown, the drum 6 is mounted within the granulating chamber 1 on a shaft 7 and is provided with radial ribs or vanes 8 and ports 9 between them for the passage of the air current. A conical nozzle 10, coaxial with the drum, is fitted at one or each end thereof, and means is provided for adjusting the annular space 13 between the nozzle and the adjacent end of the drum. The drum may comprise a number of ring-like, sections, and the base of the nozzle 10 is preferably at or outside the chamber wall and carries a packed gland 11 through which the spindle 7 passes. A flue 2 is provided to carry away fumes &c., and the opening 3 through which the slag-supply shoot 4 passes is preferably disposed adjacent the flue and a cowl 14 provided above the opening, forming a branch of, or leading to, the flue 2. The spokes of the drum 6 may be fitted with, or formed as, vanes or blades to produce a suction effect and thus augment the air pressure delivered from the nozzles 10. The granulated and dried slag falls into the space 15 below the drum and is removed through a sealisg chamber 16 fitted with interlocked flap valves 17, 18.
