Joinits with packing actuated by external fluid pressure. - A device for holding a cylindrical body 28 or for providing a hermetic seal around it comprises a tubular body 4 of elastic material clamped at both ends and provided w i t h means, such as a fluid or gaseous medium under pressure, for pressing the f r e e middle part of said body 4 against the wall of the cylindrical body 28. When adapted for hermetically connecting the exhaust tube of a lamp or vessel 14 to be exhausted to a vacuum conduit 1, the conduit 1 is provided with a vertical branch 2, over the upper end of which the rubber tube 4 is slid. The tube 4 is fixed in position at its lower end by a metal sleeve 3, which coacts with the tube 2, and at its upper end by a small bush 6, which is resiliently pulled downwards by springs 10 attached to a ring 11 fixed on the tube 2 and adapted to bend the tube 4 around the upper end of the sleeve 3. The sleeve 3 is provided with a tube 25 communicating by a cock 29 with a compressed air or vacuum conduit 30, 31 respectively, which forces the tube 4 into contact with the body 28 or facilitates its return to the initial unstretched position. The lamp 14 is resiliently supported by a spring-pressed rod 16 within the conduit 2, and in order to counteract the effect of the high temperature produced during the sealing-off of the lamp, the rubber tube 4 is provided with an external tube 12 for the circulation of a cooling medium.
