Abstract
672,614. Glass. VAPOR HEATING CORPORATION. Nov. 3, 1950 [Feb. 25, 1950], No. 26924/50. Class 56. The liquid in a thermometer tube is pressurized by supporting the tube intermediate its ends, sealed end up, within a resilient clamping ring 34. The sealed end projects into a chamber 40 containing a gas, e.g. hydrogen, under pressure, and the other end projects into a chamber 74 containing an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, under a pressure greater than that in the chamber 40. The sealed tip of the tube is now broken off by releasing a rod 52 acted on by a spring 60 and the hydrogen is thus admitted to the bore under pressure. A portion of the tube subjected to the higher nitrogen pressure is now locally heated by a heater 72 until it becomes plastic; the higher gaseous pressure in conjunction with the weight of the tube and the liquid therein causes the softened glass to collapse and reseal the tube at the locally heated point.
