Abstract
688,952. Transformers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 13, 1951 [March 31, 1950], No. 6042/51. Class 38 (ii). A transformer tank 1 is connected just above oil level 2 by a tube 4 to the bottom of an expansion chamber 5, a substantial part at least of which is below the upper level of tank 1. As the transformer temperature changes oil flows to and fro in the tube 4, the oil level in tank 1 not changing, but the oil level in expansion chamber varying between 9 and 10, the air space in this chamber communicating with the atmosphere through outlet 6 with breather 7. To maintain the oil in tank 1 at atmospheric pressure at the normal load temperature, expansion chamber 5 may be partially displaced above the upper surface of tank 1, Fig. 3 (not shown). Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the whole system is hermetically sealed. The space above level 24 of the oil in expansion chamber 23 may contain nitrogen under pressure and a silica gel dryer 30. Diaphragm 27 ruptures alone under moderate increases of pressure, and with diaphragm 26 when the pressure in tank 20 increases too suddenly for it to be relieved through tube 22.
