Abstract
211,927. Thornycroft & Co., Ltd., J. I., and Thornycroft, Sir J. I. Nov. 23, 1922. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers.- The shaft or shafts of semi-submerged propellers are arranged at such an angle to the centre-line of the vessel that the mean section of each propeller blade on immersion will be at right-angles to the centre and so drive the water directly astern. In one form the propeller b is mounted on a shaft inclined as to fulfil the required condition and when the latter is connected bv belt or toothed gearing with the engine g the whole. arrangement is balanced as regards weight with respect to the centre line of the ship. The balance of the arrangement may also be effected, where the propeller shaft is driven direct from the driving shaft, by suitably disposing the condenser on the opposite side of the centre line. In another arrangement, two propeller shafts are inclined in opposite, directions to the centre line of the ship and cross on the centre line.
