Abstract

179,607. Saunders, S. E. Feb. 3, 1921. Proprelling, steering, and manoeuvring by screw and like propellers ; driving-arrangements for screw propellers.-Relates to screw propellers carried at the lower end of a hollow stem passing through the hull, the stem being rotatable for steering, having no bottom support and containing the driving gear for the propeller and consists mainly in enclosing the bottom driving-bevels and shaft bearings in a casing which is of streamline form. The propeller a is attached to a shaft b, the bearings d, d<1> of which are contained in a casing c. This casing has a bulbous nose c', is of streamline shape, and has a bottom skeg c<z>. It is extended upwards through the gland g in the hull A and has keyed thereto a worm wheel j which coacts with a worm k adapted to be actuated from a steering wheel, the casing c and propeller a can therefor be turned for manoeuvring. The propeller is driven by bevel-wheels s, a vertical shaft r, and upper bevels u<1> from the engine shaft t, suitable thrust and journal bearings being provided. Alternatively the vertical shaft r is coupled direct to an horizontal radial engine. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 2277/74, 7839/00, 10935/00, 17748/07, and 28201/11.
