Abstract

A gas cooling process and plant is disclosed in which the gas, e.g. coke- oven gas, is air cooled in a first cooling stage (e.g. as it flows through tubes 9a, 9b) to a temperature above the dew-point of condensible material (e.g. tar, water, naphthalene) in said gas, the gas then being further cooled in a second cooling stage 23 using water as the cooling medium (e.g. in tubes 30). The first cooling stage may comprise either an upright (as shown) or transverse tube cooler. The second cooling stage may be direct or indirect; and a third cooling stage may be included. <IMAGE>
