Abstract
<PICT:0900420/III/1> Effluent from a carbon black furnace comprising black suspended in a combustible gas is cooled first by countercurrent indirect heat exchange with a cooling liquid, e.g. water, and secondly by simultaneous indirect heat exchange with the atmosphere and spraying with water. As shown effluent passes from a furnace 11 through water-jacketed pipes 24 and 26, spray pipe 27, spray tower 29, and cyclone separator 32. The effluent may be cooled from 2700 DEG F. to 1800 DEG F. in pipes 24 and 26, to 700 DEG F. in pipe 27, and 450 DEG F. in tower 29. Cooling water passes tangentially into the jacket of pipe 26 and passes therefrom radially upwards via line 77. The water then passes in a similar manner through the jacket of pipe 24. Alternatively separate cooling water may be supplied to each of pipes 24 and 26 and passed off as steam. Pipes 24 and 26 are each provided with one or more expansion joints 53. The rate of water flow to the jackets of pipes 24 and 26 and the spray nozzles of pipe 27 and tower 29 may be automatically adjusted so as to maintain constant the temperature of the effluent downstream of each cooling stage. Pipes 24 and 26 may each be replaced by a plural ity of parallel tubes. Conventional black production and collection means are described.
