Hair-curling appliances. - In a curler for permanent hair waving comprising a sleeve or mandrel rotatable on a fixed axis member, the projecting end of the latter carries an adjustable clamping device to grip the hair near the roots. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the axis member 1 is cylindrical and is provided at its inner end with a boss 2, perforated at 3 and 4. On the member 1 is arranged to rotate a sleeve 5. Within the outer end of the member 1 is a sleeve 8, internally threaded to engage a rod 9 which extends through the member 1 and projects through the aperture 4 in the boss 2. The projecting end of the rod 9 is formed into a hook 10 which engages in the hole 3 of the boss and forms a loop within which the hair is clamped. The sleeve 8 is externally threaded to engage with a thread inside the member 1, this thread being opposite-handed to that on the rod 9. Alternatively, the sleeve 8 may have a plain exterior, with a collar 11<a> bearing against the end of the member 1. In the form shown in Fig. 5, a flexible member 13 of material such as cat-gut or wire is connected to a screwed rod 9 which engages in the sleeve 8 and is provided with a flattened part 9<a> working through a guide 1<a> which prevents it from turning. The flex 13 passes through a hole in the side of the boss 2 and is attached to a plug 14 which seats in a recess in the end of the boss, a lateral slot 15 being formed for the flex 13, which thus forms a loop which can be contracted on the hair by rotating the sleeve 8.
