Abstract
225,036. Brown, A. Nov. 1, 1923. Hair-curling appliances.-A curler for use in permanent hair waving has a central bore open at both ends, the front end of the curler being cut away at one side as at 10, Fig. 1, to form a lateral opening to receive a tress of hair 15, and means such as slits 11 are provided at the rear end of the curler for directly gripping the ends of a piece of string 12 or the like which passes round the tress 15 and extends through the curler. The curler may be a plain tube, but the preferred form comprises an inner tube 1, extending beyond both ends of a partly conical outer tube 2, and having a knurled end piece 3 secured to the rear end. One or more longitudinal slots 11 having enlarged mouth portions are cut in the end piece 3, and the front end of the tube 1 is cut away at one side. The rear end of the tube 2 has a groove 5 which engages a corresponding groove 6, Fig. 2, in the end piece 3 so that the outer tube 2 is free to rotate. A helical spring 9 secured to a collar 8 which is attached to the tube 1 makes contact with the inner surface of the tube 2 and forms a clutch allowing relative rotation of the tubes in one direction only for the purpose of tightening the hair on the curler.
