Abstract

Ethyl alcohol is obtained from sulphovinic acid by treatment with ammonia, which fixes the sulphuric acid content with the evolution of sufficient heat to effect the distillation of the alcohol without the application of external heat. The ammonia is used either in the gaseous condition or in the form of a solution; ammonium sulphate is obtained as a by-product. According to the example, a stream of ammonia gas is conducted into sulphovinic acid or sulphuric acid containing sulphovinic acid: the alcohol distils off to a dephlegmator and is condensed; ammonium sulphate settles out or remains dissolved in the ammonia-saturation vessel. The operation may be carried out at normal or reduced pressure. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the treatment of the sulphovinic acid with any reagent which fixes the sulphuric acid content with evolution of heat. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:In the production of ethyl alcohol from sulphovinic acid by treatment with gaseous ammonia or ammonia solutions to fix the sulphuric acid content, ammonium sulphate is obtained as a by-product. According to the example, a stream of ammonia gas is conducted into sulphovinic acid or sulphuric acid containing sulphovinic acid; the alcohol distils off to a dephlegmator and is condensed; ammonium sulphate settles out or remains dissolved in the ammonia-saturation vessel. The operation may be carried out at normal or reduced pressure.
