Abstract
Acrylonitrile oil, the acrylonitrile containing traces of impurities obtained according to the process of Specification 719,635, is purified by treatment with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal sulphite followed by fractionation to recover the acrylonitrile. The treatment with the alkali metal sulphite may be carried out continuously and the acrylonitrile oil may be washed with water after the treatment with the alkali metal sulphite. In an example, crude acrylonitrile, obtained by passing a mixture of acrolein, ammonia and air over a molybdic acid catalyst is scrubbed with dilute sulphuric acid and water and the aqueous extract is distilled. Crude acrylonitrile is separated, allowed to stand until free from hydrogen cyanide and fractionated to obtain acrylonitrile oil. A portion of the latter is treated twice with aqueous sodium sulphite, washed with water, distilled, polymerized and spun into threads. For comparison, threads are similarly prepared from a further portion of the acrylonitrile oil omitting the treatment with alkali metal sulphite and from a further portion which has been washed with water.
