Abstract

In a method for the production of calcium nitrate, ammoniacal gases obtained by the distillation or gasefication of fuels or similar ammoniacal gases, after being freed from flue dust, tar, and hydrogen sulphide, are treated with aqueous nitric acid or ammonium nitrate liquor containing nitric acid, the ammonium nitrate liquor produced is converted by burnt lime into calcium nitrate liquor and gaseous ammonia, and the latter catalytically oxidized to nitric acid which serves for the absorption of more ammonia. In a modification, hydrogen sulphide is first removed from the gases by milk of lime, and the calcium hydrosulphide solution formed reacted with the ammonium nitrate obtained by absorbing the ammonia to produce a calcium nitrate liquor and a mixture of hydrogen sulphide and ammonia. From the mixture ammonia may be washed out by cold water, and air or gases containing oxygen be passed through the ammoniacal liquor to obtain a gas mixture which is converted to nitric acid. In the ammonia absorption step, the gases may first be treated in countercurrent with the ammonium nitrate liquor produced, then with ammonium nitrate liquor containing nitric acid, and finally be treated with alkaline ammonium nitrate liquor to absorb entrained nitric acid. The gaseous ammonia obtained by reacting the ammonium nitrate liquor with burnt lime may be freed from water vapour by contacting it with cold ammonium nitrate liquor, whereby the latter is heated prior to its reaction with the lime. The calcium nitrate liquor, which preferably contains an excess of calcium oxide, is worked up in known manner.
