Abstract

A solution comprising ammonium carbamate, ammonia and water for the production of urea is produced by condensing a gaseous mixture of ammonia and carbon dioxide at a pressure of 20-45 atmos. and a temperature of 60-90 DEG C. preferably 70-85 DEG C. in the presence of liquid ammonia containing not more than 25 per cent, preferably less than 12 per cent. of water. Condensation may be aided by external cooling. Water and liquid ammonia may be fed separately to the condensing vessel. The water may previously have been used to remove residual ammonia and carbon dioxide from the gases passing out of the condenser.
