Regenerators. - In a regenerator for heating air or gas of the kind comprising a rotary body provided with passages which communicate alternately with passages for the air or gas to be heated and the heating gases and arranged in t h e smoke stack 5 of a steam-boiler as shown at 6 in Fig. 2, the air after leaving the rotary regenerator is further heated in a pipe 9<c> passing through the smokebox 4 to the furnace. The smoke stack is divided by a vertical partition into passages 9<a>, 9<b> for air and passages 8, 8<a> for flue gases. The rotary body 6 is driven from a shaft on which are mounted one or more fans 11 for forcing the air through the passages 9<a>, 9<b>, 9<c> to the furnace and the passages in the rotary body 6, and one or more fans 8<c> for forcing the flue gases from the smoke-box 4 through the rotary body 6, the passages 8, 8<a> and the pipe 8<d> which extends through the air passage 9<a> into the stack. The regenerator may be so constructed and arranged in the smoke stack that, when it is not in use, the flue gases may pass to one side of it.
