Combined buffer and draw-gear.-In a central buffing and draw gear for a rail or like vehicle of the type in which the spring arrangements are such that one spring or set of springs are compressed to a limited extent either in buffing or drawing before the other spring or set of springs comes into action, after which both sets of springs are compressed in parallel, the spring or springs b that come into action first are located between an end pressure plate k and an intermediate compression plate h, the pressure upon which is transmitted from the other end pressure plate d through a sleeve g which may be formed in one with either the intermediate compression plate h or the last mentioned end pressure plate d, a compression plate f for the other spring or set of springs a being mounted to slide on the sleeve g, and the preliminary compression of the spring b that comes into action first being limited by one or more sleeves o, n located between the sliding plate f and the end compression plate k. The springs b that first come into action are made more sensitive to resist light loads than the other spring a that comes into action later.. In order to facilitate assembling and also to stress the springs initially, blocks s are inserted between the rear stops r and the rear flange k. In a modification, the springs and component parts may be placed the reverse way on the drawrod c, and in a further modification, the casings o, n abut, ,and the sleeve g is placed a short distance from the front end pressure plate d. One or both sets of springs may be of rubber or steel'. but when one is of rubber and one of steel, the springs should preferably be arranged that under heavy blows the rubber springs prevent the steel' spring being pressed home.
