Starting and stopping appliances. -In a railway or like wagon, in order to facilitate starting, the body is capable of moving longitudinally independently of the chassis, a connection being made between the locomotive and wagon through levers. The levers A C, B C<1> are pivoted at P, P<1> on the body of the vehicle so that P C, P<1> C<1>, are about twice the length of A P, B P<1> respectively. Chains attached to the ends C, C' pass over pulleys and are connected to the locomotive or preceding wagon, the ends A, B being connected to the chassis frame which is provided with slots for the reception of rollers attached to the body and along which the body moves. When starting the wagon the body remains stationary and the chassis moves forward until the rollers on the body reach the ends of the slots, whereupon the chassis and body move forward together. When the brakes are applied, the chassis comes to rest and the body moves forward to the end of the slots.
