Abstract

158,066. Beardmore, Sir W., Chorlton, A. E. L., and Doig, J. S. Oct. 24, 1919. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers. - The power of a marine internal-combustion engine can be proportioned between the propulsion of the vessel and the driving of a winch or windlass through suitable change-speed gear. Fig. 1 shows one arrangement in which the engine is divided into two power groups A, B, operating separate lengths of shaft which can be coupled by a clutch E. One end of the main crank-shaft is connected to the propeller G and the other to a change-speed gear K through a clutch J. The change-speed gear is controlled by hand-operated gear K<1> and drives a winch N through a safetyappliance M<1>, for example a slipping clutch. When both clutches E, J, are closed, the whole or any proportion of the engine power can be applied to drive the winch by regulating the feathering blades of the propeller from the setting-appliance H, thus varying the power absorbed in propulsion. Opening the clutch E causes the winch to be driven by the power group B, while the opening of the clutch J cuts out the winch and leaves the whole engine power available for propulsion. In a modified construction, the engine is composed of a single power group with a governor acting as a speed-regulator. In this case, the regulation of the blades of the propeller forms the sole means of varying the power supplied to the winch.
