Abstract

Driving-gear.-An engine for ship propulsion has a power transmission shaft A driven from the crank-shaft through toothed gearing or chains and a pair of clutches so that the shaft A may be driven in either direction. As shown, a pinion B<2> gears with a wheel A<3> on the free portion F of a friction clutch x and at the opposite end of the engine the two shafts are connected by a chain drive, one of the chain wheels being mounted upon the free portion E of a second clutch y. The portions F<2>, E<2> of the clutches are secured to the shaft A, which is moved axially by a hand-lever G to engage one or other of the clutches for running ahead or astern. The thrust of the propeller holds the clutches in their engaged positions. The mass of the clutches may be such as to enable a fly-wheel to be dispensed with; or a fly-wheel J may be mounted upon the crank-shaft.
