Abstract
158,312. Beardmore, Sir W., Chorlton, A. E. L., and Doig, J. S. Oct. 24, 1919. Driving - arrangements for screw propellers. - Internalcombustion engines are arranged in ships for driving the propellers and for driving a winch, windlass, dynamo &c. at the same time. The propeller is of the feathering type, a governor is provided on the engine, and a clutch is placed between the engine and winch. The clutch operation and propeller blade adjustment may be effected simultaneously. The six-cylinder Diesel or semi- Diesel engine A is directly coupled to the propeller G, controlling-mechanism for the blades being provided. At the other end of the power shaft, a dynamo E is coupled through a clutch D. When a winch is to be driven, there is additionally provided a variable-speed transmission gear. When the auxiliary machinery is coupled up, the propeller blades are adjusted to take less power, the engine revolutions being maintained by the governor F.
