Abstract
574,998. Power plant. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd. May 17, 1943, No. 7840. Convention date, May 16, 1942. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A marine propulsion system for torpedoboats and the like comprises two internal - combustion engine units A, B, Fig. 1, joined end to end with an interposed gear housing 2, the crankshaft ends 30, 32 of the engine units extending into the gear housing and being connected by gearing so that each unit drives one of two concentric propeller shafts 54, 42, driving contra-rotating propellers, one of which is provided with pitch-changing gearing driven by a shaft 66 enclosed by the propeller shafts. Each unit consists of two six-cylinder engines arranged side by side, and has two side facings 6 for attaching either closures or ,superchargers driven from bevel gearing 10. Means may be provided for closing the normal carburetter throttles 24 when the superchargers are clutched in. The lower end of the gear housing has an extension 56 carrying an electric motor 4 driving the shaft 66 which carries a gear 86 connected through planetary gears 78 with an external gear on the propeller hub 84. Gears 88 on the planet carrier engage a stationary gear 86 and an external gear on a sleeve 92 connected through gears 96, 100 to a propeller blade. When the motor 4 is actuated the sleeve 92 is rotated in the hub, thus rotating the blade on its axis and altering the pitch. The other blades on the propeller have similar pitchchanging gear.
