Abstract

1433689 Seals EXXON PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO 30 April 1974 [4 June 1973] 18816/74 Heading F2B In a high pressure plunger pump, the puncturing of packing 26, 32 is instantly detected by means responsive to impingement thereon, through jetting, of the fluid confined by the packing. Jet 67 emerges from duct 39, when packing 26 is punctured and deflects paddle 42, thereby operating limit switch 52 to actuate an alarm and, optionally, to stop the operation of the pump. Alternatively, duct 39 may be closed by a valve 40, to bring packing 32 into operation. When this, in turn, is punctured, it produces a jet 68, which has the same effect on the paddle 42. A further jet 69 may be produced by failure of 0-ring seal 23. High pressure lubricant is supplied through ducts 36, 37. (For Figure see next column.)
