Abstract
1,059,098. Shaft seals. C. A. PARSONS & CO. Ltd. Feb. 26, 1965 [June 9. 1964], No. 23930/64. Heading F2B. In a sealing arrangement for a rotary shaft where it extends through a gas-containing enclosure, e.g. in a gas circulator or a turbine driven gas-cooled electric generator, and comprising a sealing ring 2 having a sealing face which contacts a collar 3 on the shaft and is formed with radial grooves through which oil under pressure is circulated, means are provided to maintain a fixed pressure difference between the oil pressure and the gas pressure over an upper range of gas pressures and to maintain the oil pressure constant over a lower range of gas pressures. Oil is fed from a tank 1 to the seals A and B by a pump 11 and the oil pressure is kept at a fixed amount above the gas pressure over an upper range of gas pressures by a spring-loaded differential control valve 4 and maintained at a constant minimum value over a lower range of gas pressures by a spring-loaded relief valve 8 fitted upstream of the valve 4 in the oil circuit.
