Abstract

1,245,308. End-face seals. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 31 Jan., 1969 [13 Feb., 1968], No. 5479/69. Heading F2B. A sealing member 9 in a housing 8 is pressed axially into engagement with a sealing member 23 which is made of porous material (e.g. graphite) and mounted on a part 2 rotatable with the shaft 1, the part being provided with one or more passages 26 for supplying lubricating liquid to the porous sealing member from an impeller 21a, 22a. The lubricant, which is also a coolant, is introduced into the chamber 12 through an inlet 14 and is discharged from the chamber from an outlet gap 15, the chamber being pressurized to balance the gas pressure in the chamber 13 by means of the impeller blades 21a, 22a which draw the liquid from the chamber 12 via ducts 25.
