Abstract
839,880. Stuffing-box substitutes. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. Dec. 11, 1957 [Dec.12, 1956], No. 37968/56. Class 122 (5). A seal between two relatively rotatable members, for example a rotary shaft 11 and casing wall 12 of a hydrogen filled alternator, comprises a sealing ring 13 carried by one of the members and urged axially into sealing contact with the other member by fluid pressure adjustable to vary the sealing face contact pressure and means to supply sealing fluid to the sealing face. The ring 13 is connected to the casing 12 by a splined coupling (not shown) and sealed thereto by packing rings 18 and has a face 14 urged into contact with a flange 15 on the shaft by liquid supplied under pressure by a pump 24 via a duct 21 to a chamber 20 formed by the ring and casing. The liquid pressure is controlled by a relief valve 22 controlled by a solenoid 26 energized by a relay 27 which is coupled to a governor 28 responsive to shaft speed and is actuated when the speed falls below a predetermined value whereby at low speeds the load on the sealing face 14 is reduced. Sealing oil is supplied to the face 14 through passages 16 and 17. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), relay 27 is coupled to the leads of a barring motor connected to shaft 11 so that when the shaft is rotated slowly by the motor the sealing face pressure is reduced.
