Abstract

1,143,456. Fluid-pressure operated motors. TOMKINS-JOHNSON CO. April 21, 1967 [April 29, 1966], No. 18553/67. Heading F1P. In an hydraulic or pneumatic motor comprising a piston 14 slidable in a cylinder 10 having end closures 12, at least one end closure 12 is provided with a plunger 66 urged by a spring 78 to a position in which its end 68 projects inwardly into the path of movement of the piston 14 or other part 18 movable therewith, whereby at or near the end of the piston's stroke towards the closure 12 the plunger is moved outwardly to cause operation of a valve (not shown) or an electrical limit switch 90, or to provide a visual indication of the piston's position. The plunger 66 is slidable in a casing 46 screwed into the end closure 12 with its end 56 projecting therefrom to thereby provide a screwed stud for a nut 84 used to secure a switch or valve housing 80 to the end closure. To balance the effects of fluid-pressure in the cylinder 10 acting on the end 68 of the plunger 66, the plunger is provided with passages for communicating the fluid-pressure to a chamber 52 in the casing 46 in which is disposed a flange 70 on the plunger and equal in area to the end 68. Fluid leaking past the plunger 66 escapes through a passage 108. When the motor is air operated the passages through the plunger may be omitted, Fig. 3 (not shown).
