[Class 146 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] In a gas or hydraulically operated piston unit the piston 7 and piston rod 8 are normally housed wholly within a hermetically sealed cylinder 1, the outer end of the cylinder being sealed by a sheet or disc 16, e.g., of lead, which is arranged to be sheared by the end of the piston rod 8 as it moves outwardly of the cylinder during actuation of the piston unit. As used in dinghy stowage equipment in aircraft, CO, is admitted to the cylinder 1 through an inlet port 2 and a passage 3 to move the piston 7 and piston rod 8 outwardly and thereafter to allow the gas to flow through an outlet port 4 and passages 5 and 6 to inflate the dinghy. A screwed plug 17 having a central hole 18 holds the sheet 16 in position ; the catches of the dinghy stowage cover are operated by the outward movement of suitable linkage, partly indicated at 19. The forward end of the piston 7 has a conical face 21 adapted to bear against a conical seating 22 formed on the inner face of the cylinder 1 to prevent any gas from escaping. A spring- pressed plunger 9 engaging an annular groove 12 in the piston rod 8 retains the rod in its inoperative position.
