Abstract

142,614. Cheswright, L K., and Prieux, L. March 25, 1919. Valves; valve-gear. - In an engine having a separate compression chamber for receiving the charge prior to ignition, the cylinder A and the compression chamber C are intermittently put in communication by way of ports 4, 5 in slide valves F, G respectively, operated by cam-gear K from the crank-shaft L. The chamber C is in communication with the cylinder during the latter part of the compression stroke and during the outward movement of the piston on the firing stroke until the crank is about 30 degrees from the dead-centre. The charge is then ignited, communication between the cylinder and compression chamber being cut off during the expansion, exhaust, and suction strokes, and during the first part of the compression stroke, until the pressure in the cylinder is approximately equal to that in the auxiliary chamber. During the exhaust stroke, communication between the cylinder and exhaust pipe D is effected by way of ports 2, 1, 8, 9, and during the suction stroke between the cylinder and the induction pipe E by way of ports 2, 1 ,3. Lubrication of the valves is effected by oil supplied to a duct Q by a pump P. In a modification, the auxiliary compression chamber is formed as a cavity in the valve G.
