Abstract
166,234. Rossman, A. M. July 18, 1919. Valves; valve-gear.-A two-stroke-cycle internal-combustion engine, with means for controlling power at various altitudes, comprises banks of double cylinders 20, 23 fitted with double pistons 30, 31, the power stroke taking place on top of the upper piston 30, while the underside of this piston and the upper side of the lower piston 31 serve to compress explosive charges or, in the case of an engine in which fuel is injected, charges of air. Charges of explosive mixture are admitted from the induction pipe 34, by way of rotary valves 37, 38 driven by bevel-gearing at the same speed as the crank shaft, alternately to the compression space 22 below the upper piston and the lower cylinder 23. The cylinder 20 is connected by a port 54 to a combustion chamber 43, in which are located a sleeve valve 44 and a piston 45, actuated respectively by rods 61, 46 from a shaft 47, driven by bevel-gearing and a differential that may be advanced or retarded, from the crank-shaft. The compression spaces 22, 23 communicate by way of non-return valves, with a manifold 48, which is connected to a port 49 in the combustion chamber 43. The sleeve valve 44 is formed with two ports, one 52 adapted to register with the port 49, and the other 55 adapted to uncover a recess 56 in the chamber 43 in which is located a sparking-plug 57 sparking continuously. Throttle-valves 59 in the induction pipe are operated simultaneously to control power at different altitudes. In operation, charges from each of the two compression spaces alternately are compressed into the manifold 48, and are admitted into the combustion chamber 43 by the sleeve valve 44. When the piston 30 is at the top'of the stroke, the charge is fired, and at the same time the chamber 43 is placed in communication with the cylinder 20 by way of a port 54 in the sleeve valve 44. On the up-stroke of the piston 30, the valve 44 moves downward and the combustion gases are exhausted through the port 54.
