Latches, sliding; catches, yielding.-A combined safety window catch or holder and locking-bolt suitable for locking one or more sliding sashes or venetians in a railway carriage, comprises a cylindrical bolt B slidable by gravity with or without the assistance of a spring N in an inclined hole A in the frame, and having at the front end a flattened hook or tongue H which engages a slotted plate K on the sliding sash. Semi-cylindrical notches O, P on the underside of the catch co-act with a notched bolt E which can be turned to lock the sash when in engagement with the notch O, and to retain the catch free of the sash when in engagement with the notch P. A single bolt E can thus lock several sashes according to the number of notches R.
