In a shoe of the kind having spikes projecting from a moulded flexible sole of rubber or synthetic plastics material the spike retaining plate for at least the two rearmost spikes in the sole region is extended through the waist of the shoe to act as an arch support. The spike retaining plate may be made of metal or may be moulded from plastics material and the spikes may be permanently attached or detachably secured, e.g. by a screw thread. In its simplest form the spike retaining plate 1 (Fig. 2) extends between lines 8 and 9 and carries the rearmost pair of sole spikes 10. The plate 1 may be extended into the forepart at 11 and carries spikes 12 and may be extended into the heel at 15 where it is fixed to the retainer 16 for the heel spikes 17. Alternatively the heel extension may extend down the breast face of the heel where it is joined to the heel spike retainer. The plate 1 is embedded in the sole and heel unit 32 during moulding. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4) the spike retainer consists of a layer 28 in which the spikes 10, 12, 17 are embedded and which is moulded to the bottom of the sole and heel unit 32.
