Abstract
1,227,290. Extruding; billet piercing. CALUMET & HECLA CORP. 15 Sept., 1969 [7 Oct., 1968], No. 45389/69. Headings B3H and B3P. A tube extrusion press has a mandrel 20 with a shaped tip comprising a cylindrical portion 24 which is held into the extrusion die 10 during extrusion and a larger portion 22 which is moved into the die after extrusion to sever the tube from the billet discard. The mandrel is moved hydraulically and held during the extrusion step by retractable U-shaped stops 36. After extrusion the stops are retracted to allow a mandrel guide 34 to move on to fixed nuts 52. The mandrel may be used to pierce the billet initially. It has a cooling duct 60 leading to a concave forward face 80. The tip is screwed into the mandrel 20 and has flats (82), Fig. 11 (not shown), engageable by a wrench. The billet is extruded by an hydraulic ram 40 acting through a pressure pad 44 and the cooling fluid from the mandrel passes as steam along the tube.
