Abstract
1,035,305. Extruding. BALDWIN-LIMAHAMILTON CORPORATION. Aug. 20, 1964 [Sept. 18, 1963], No. 34133/64. Heading B3P. An extrusion press suitable for both direct and indirect extrusion, comprises an axially movable billet container 28, Fig. 1, having on one side a stationary stem 12 carrying a die 18 and on its opposite side a movable extrusion stem 22, and means 42 for selectively coupling the container to move with the extrusion stem thereby to extrude the billet 40 indirectly through the die. The billet 40 is fed to the extrusion axis by a conveyer 38 and an annular shell disc 36 is fed by a conveyer 32. The container 28 is then moved to the left to enclose the billet and disc, Fig. 3 (not shown). A U-shaped spacer 42 is then moved transversely between the main ram 26 and the container 28, and the ram is actuated hydraulically to move the extrusion stem 22 and its extrusion disc 24 together with the container 28 and thereby extrude the billet through the die 18. This comprises a pair of die inserts 76, 78, Fig. 9 (not shown), whereby two wires 44, 46 are extruded simultaneously. After extrusion the residue 48 adhering to a shell 58, has collected in the shell disc 36 and the wires are sheared therefrom by shear pins 54, 56 operated by a spring-loaded ram 80. The stationary stem 12 is mounted on a transverse slide 14 and after withdrawal of the ram 26 and container 28, the stationary stem is moved out of the extrusion axis, Fig. 5 (not shown), the spacer 42 is withdrawn, and a clearing disc 52, Fig. 6 (not shown), is forced through the container by the extrusion stem 22 to clear the shell and residue out of the container bore and into a recess in the carrier 14. For direct extrusion the spacer 42 is inoperative whereby the container 28 remains stationary.
