Abstract

1,060,869. Billet piercing; extruding. REYNOLDS METALS CO. Oct. 20, 1964 [Oct. 21, 1963], No. 42792/64. Headings B3H and B3P. In the extrusion of a tube from a solid billet, the latter is first pierced by a mandrel 29 and then extruded by a stem 37 between the mandrel tip 30 and a die 27. The latter is mounted in a holder 25 and supported by bolsters 16-21. Mandrel 29 comprises separable portions 30-36 and is actuated hydraulically, pneumatically or mechanically. Lands 45 on the mandrel engage the bore of the press stem 37 to centre the tip 30 in the die 27. Stem 37 is also actuated hydraulically, pneumatically or mechanically and has a dummy block 47 with inner and external lands engaging respectively the mandrel and the bore 15 of container 13, 14. Billet 15 may be of aluminium-containing metal and is heated. The extruded tube has a closed leading end and to relieve the vacuum therein, its wall is pierced by a bullet from a cartridge device 61 as described in Specification 1,060,870.
