Abstract

1,122,163. Extruding. KOBE STEEL Ltd. 16 Jan., 1967 [19 Jan., 1966], No. 2324/67. Heading B3P. A metal extrusion press has a single billet container 6 movable transversely from the extrusion axis C-C to a cleaning and changing axis C<SP>1</SP>-C<SP>1</SP> where the extrusion discard is removed by means 19, the container bore is cleaned by means 19, 20 and a fresh billet B<SP>1</SP> is inserted by a pusher 23. The press has a plurality of extrusion dies and die holders 5 mounted in a rotary carrier 4 and extrusion of a tube is effected by a hollow ram 7 and mandrel 8. Container 6 is mounted in a holder 10 pivoted on a shaft 11 and adapted to be swung between the two axes by a fluid operated rack 15. After extrusion of a tube (A), Fig. 4 (not shown), the ram and mandrel are withdrawn and cooled with water, Fig. 5 (not shown), the container is retracted by a piston 18 and the discard is severed by a saw (24). Container 6 is then swung into axis C<SP>1</SP>-C<SP>1</SP> where the discard is removed by pusher 19 and the bore is cleaned by rotary member 20. A fresh billet B<SP>1</SP> is then inserted by fluid actuated pusher 23. In another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the container is slidable transversely.
