Abstract

1,220,792. Tubular heat exchangers. BRITISH DOMESTIC APPLIANCES Ltd. 14 Jan., 1970 [16 Jan., 1969], No. 2598/69. Heading F4S. Each of a plurality of transverse fins 12 for a heat exchange tube 11 is formed with an openended slot 15 the closed end of which has a lateral flange 15A therearound by means of which the fin is clamped to the tube using clamping members 13, 14. These members extendaxially of the tube for at least a distance greater than that occupied by two fins, the clamping member 13 (and in a modification the clamping member 14 also) having a saddleshaped portion 13A in which are a slot or slots (16, Figs. 3, 4), the saddle portions on each side of a slot constituting clamping means for the individual fin flanges 15A. A thermallyconducting paste containing, e.g. powdered aluminium may be introduced between the fin flanges and the tube. On assembly, the fins in their flattened form (i.e. with the flange portions 15A unbent and in the same plane as the fin) are passed edgewise through the slots in the clamping member 13 and bent over before the latter is applied to the tube. When used as an evaporator in a refrigerator, clamping member 13 is bolted directly to the freezer compartment (2, Fig. 1) so dispensing with clamping member 14. The fin assembly may also be clamped around a steam or hot water pipe to constitute a room heating radiator.
