1,189,584. Monitoring the rimming of steel. CENTRE NATIONAL DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES. May 29, 1968 [May 29, 1967; Nov.27, 1967], No.25695/68. Heading C7D. [Also in Division G1] Rimming of a steel ingot is monitored by measuring a rimming-related physical or chemical parameter without hindering the eflux of gases from the ingot or contact of the liquid steel with atmospheric oxygen for a plurality of heats to produce curves correlated with rimming-influencing variables and measuring the rimming-related parameter of a test ingot to produce a curve for comparison with the correlated curves. An infrared radiation detector 17, Fig. 1a receives radiation through a triangular horn 19 from a zone just above the steel surface where incandescence and luminescence occurs. The horn 19 is angularly movable about a pivot 11 and adjustable along and about a tripod stem 6, the horn aperture being varied by shutters 22, 23. The detector 17 comprises a measuring infrared cell 27, Fig.2, and an identical masked cell 25 for temperature compensation connected in a bridge circuit with a recorder 32 across the diagonal. Capacitors 35, 36 by-pass current fluctuations in the bridge. A subsidiary detector, 38 of narrow field of view is trained on the teeming jet and de-energizes relay 42 to connect the D.C. supply to the bridge when the teeming jet ceases. Other physical or chemical parameters that may be measured are, (i) the emission spectra of the evolved CO and CO 2 (ii) the pyrometric temperature of the evolved gases. (iii) the speed of sound through the gases (iv) the flux of sparks emitted by the ingot. (Measured by weighing, counting or radiation intensity) (v) the sonic or ultrasonic emission from the ingot.
