Abstract

1,148,084. Alginate-borate compositions. FOSECO TRADING A.G. 29 Nov., 1967 [15 Dec., 1966], No. 56266/66. Heading C3U. [Also in Division B2] A composition comprises a water-soluble alginate and an alkali metal borate, optionally together with an alkali metal silicate and a surfactant. In examples, compositions contain sodium alginate and borax, optionally with sodium silicate or sodium dioctylsulphosuccinate and NaNO 2 (as corrosion inhibitor). The composition may be a water solution or be a paste, e.g. in isopropanol or glycerol, which is subsequently dissolved in water and preferably kept at pH 8-10. The composition is used to coat metals. It is believed that the borax acts as a cross-linking agent for the alginate.
