Abstract

1,041,551. Cigarette-making machines. MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd., and D. W. MOLINS. Sept. 6, 1962 [Sept. 7, 1961], No. 32113/61. Heading A2C. In a continuous rod cigarette-making machine a stream of tobacco on a conveyer band is disrupted and projected by an air current on to a moving air-pervious conveying surface through which air is sucked and the further continuous tobacco stream formed is compressed, trimmed and wrapped. Cut tobacco is showered from a hopper 1 onto a continuous tape 2 formed into a broad "U" shape by passage between side guides 4 and the tobacco stream formed is compressed by passage of the tape 2 through a progressively narrowing "U" in a block 8. The tape then moves into a shoe 9 in which the "U" is progressively diminisheed in height and at the same time the tobacco particles are transferred to a moving perforated band e.g. of stainless steel, by an air current created by suction applied through the band 15 by means of a suction chamber located between its upper and lower runs and having walls 18, 19, 20 and holes 22, 23 for connection to a suction source. The air reaches the tobacco by being drawn in through gaps 36, 37 between the tape 2 and side guides 24, 25 (Fig. 4) having sharp edges 38, 39 and chamfers 40 for the creation of vortices in the air flow. A plate 26 blocks off one end of the suction chamber so that a forward motion is imparted to the air current. The tobacco is then compressed by a paddle wheel 28 and any surplus removed by trimming devices 33, 34 as described in Specification 1,041,553 and is then wrapped in a paper web 10 to form a continuous rod ready for cutting up into cigarettes. Rolls 5 and 16 are driven and the paddle wheel 28 by gears 31, 30, 29 from the roll 5.
