Abstract

Tobacco drawn upwards by suction on to an airpervious conveyer band 1 (Fig. 1) to form a tobacco filler, passes between side guides 9 and 10 which form a trough through which the conveyer and the filler move, the guides 9 and 10 having means associated therewith to modify the movement of the tobacco particles towards the band and hence to modify their aggregation. A passage formed by side walls 3 and end walls 4 and 5 extends upwardly towards the perforated band 1 through which air is drawn into a chamber 2 by suction means not shown. Air is supplied and tobacco is fed into this passage by means not shown, and some of the air is drawn off through a perforated, louvred plate 6 as disclosed in Specification 916,141. The walls 3 are extended up to the band 1 by the side guides 9 and 10 (Figs. 1 and 2), which in one embodiment have horizontal grooves of acme thread type of section at their top ends, (Fig. 2) and in another embodiment have fillets 20 (Fig. 4) fitted. Beyond the end wall 4 the passage between the walls 3 is closed by a rotating paddle wheel 12 in a housing 21. The filler is trimmed by a pair of discs 7 and the trimmed filler deposited on a paper web 8 which is then wrapped around it to form a continuous wrapped cigarette rod.
