930,053. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Feb. 21, 1962 [Feb. 24, 1961], No. 6778/62. Class 130. In a continuous-rod machine as tobacco is fed from a U-folded belt 3 on to and at a slightly lower speed than the peripheral speed of a suction wheel 8 rotating anticlockwise as viewed in Fig. 1, it is first blown up against a flexible elastic plate 123 extending from a guide-plate 23 by a draught of air F2 flowing through a gap 9 towards apertures 10. The entry of air from the sides is excluded by walls 22 of, for example, rubber or plastics material. The flexible plate 123 has a fork-shaped end with two tongues having a V-shaped notch between them. The guide-plate 23 which is formed from a channelshaped member is pivotally mounted by a pin 24 and slidably mounted by a bolt 52 passing through arcuate slots 51 in the walls 22 to permit pre-set adjustment of the pressure of the flexible plate 123 on the tobacco stream. A second similarly-constructed guide-plate 26 is also fitted. A trimming wheel 29 and cooperating blade 30 are mounted at one end of a bell-crank lever 33, the other end of which carries a roller 37 that is held in contact with a cam 36 by a spring-loaded tappet 38. The trimmed tobacco filler stream is released from the suction-wheel 8, when it reaches the lowermost point of rotation, by fixed packing 113 which cuts off the suction. The filler stream is then directed by a scraper 40 on to a continuous band of cigarette paper 7 carried on a conveyer 5 and fed through a conical semi-tubular tongue 41 to begin the formation of the cigarette rod. Any remaining tobacco particles are removed from the wheel 8 by air forced into a space 42 in the packing 113 and discharged through a tube 45. The movement of the trimming wheel 29 in response to the cam 36 produces a regular variation in the tobacco stream density and is synchronized with the cutting of the wrapped rod into individual cigarettes so that the cigarettes are densest at their ends. Similar dense parts may be produced under portions of cigarettes to be printed upon. In a modification the entire cam 36 and its transmission are raised and lowered according to the weight of cigarettes produced.
