Class 130 An adjusting element 22a, which enters the path of a composite filler, consisting of alternate mouthpiece stubs and tobacco sections, behind a stub and moves forward faster than the stub to ensure correct positioning thereof, comprises a thin bladelike element which can pass through at least some of the tobacco in its movement towards the stub. A tobacco filler, formed on a conveyer 2, is cut by a knife 7 into sections which are spaced apart by a cigarette paper web 20 moving faster than the conveyer 2, a cam-shaped member 17 helping to accelerate the tobacco sections up to the speed of the web 20. The stubs are removed from a fluted wheel 15 by cam-actuated fingers 12 projecting from a transfer wheel 9 which deposits the stubs in the spaces between the tobacco sections, a scraper shoe 18' preventing tobacco or stubs from being lifted by the wheel, which wheel has a peripheral speed slightly greater than that of the web 20 to cause such stubs to abut against the preceding tobacco section. The composite filler passes beneath the garniture tongue 21 through a slot in which the fingers 22a pass into the path of the filler. Each thin' finger 22a, Figs. 1 and 3, fixed to a rotary wheel 22, moves at a greater speed than the filler and is associated with a thick tobaccoadvancing finger 22b. The finger 22a enters the filler a short distance behind a stub and moves through the tobacco without advancing the tobacco until it contacts the stub which it then correctly positions. The finger 22b enters the filler behind the finger 22a and advances some tobacco to close up any gap between a tobacco section and the preceding plug. The composite filler then passes to the usual wrapping and cutting mechanism. An intermittently operating blower 27 blows tobacco dust from the spaces between the tobacco sections before insertion of the stubs, the dust being collected by a suction nozzle 28.
