[Also in Group XXX] An endless conveyer band 1 carrying a stream of unwrapped tobacco is driven by a driving roller 21, Fig. 4, and has its speed alternately increased or decreased by guide rollers 22, 23 arranged on opposite sides of the roller 21 and carried by a pivoted lever 24 oscillated by a cam 27 so that the rollers 22, 23 are alternately raised and lowered. The stream of tobacco is delivered through a guide 2, Fig. 1, on to a paper web 4 carried by a conveyer 5 running at the higher speed of the conveyer 1 and is cut by a knife 6, whereupon the speed of the conveyer 1 is immediately reduced by the action of the cam 27 to form a gap between the cut length of tobacco carried forward by the web 4 and the uncut stream, into which gap a mouthpiece stub is subsequently inserted by a wheel 9, as described in Specification 709,197, to form a composite filler. After the formation of the gap, the speed of the conveyer 1 is again increased up to that of the conveyer 5 to deliver the uncut filler on to the web 4 substantially at the speed of the web until the next cutting operation. A roller 7 rotating at the speed of the web 4 engages the cut portions and ensures that they move with the web and a shoe 12 beyond the stub insertion wheel 9 presses the stubs on to the web, the under surface of the shoe 12 being either flat or, as in Fig. 3, provided with two ribs 19, 20. A rotatable disc 14 has sets of fingers 15, 16, 17, which move slightly faster than the web 4 and engage the tobacco just behind a stub to ensure abutment between the tobacco and stub, the composite filler finally passing to a wrapping mechanism.
